European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says
The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
